Equality and InclusivityBrown Memorial Park Avenue is a welcoming, inclusive church. We invite lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons to join us, and we support the full inclusion of LGBT people in all aspects of church life. We are proud that the lead plaintiffs in the recent Maryland Marriage Equality lawsuit, Gita Dean and Lisa Polyak, are members of Brown Memorial Park Avenue. The church joined other groups in signing an amicus brief in support of marriage equality and the plaintiffs in this suit. BMPA is also one of the original covenanting Baltimore Presbytery church members of That All May Freely Serve, a national organization whose purpose is to gain for LGBT people the right to be called, ordained and installed as deacons, elders, and ministers of the Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). The Diversity Committee Our Diversity Committee’s mission is to promote a welcoming and inclusive church community that values all people. Their vision is of a church that is willing to grow and change as our membership grows and changes, and that can be a force for inclusion, equality and justice in an increasingly diverse world. The issues they focus on relate to racial and ethnic diversity, disability and access, sexuality and gender, immigration, differences in religious beliefs and backgrounds, and other forms of human difference. Over the past two years, they have presented adult forums on a range of diversity topics, launched a Wednesday night dinner series on conflict transformation, developed a plan to improve the accessibility of our church community, and participated in outreach activities to the GBLT community and other communities.
