    Brown Memorial Tutoring Program

The Brown Memorial Tutoring Program was launched in the early 1960s to improve the educational prospects of inner-city Baltimore children. Once an official part of Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, the program now enjoys support not only from our church, but also from a broad cross-section of the community, including foundations, other churches and individual givers.

This year we are tutoring about 85 children, thanks to about 60 volunteer tutors who are given intensive training from reading specialists each fall.

Four days a week, we bring children from Mt. Royal, Eutaw Marshburn and Rosemont elementary schools to the Brown Memorial building in Bolton Hill. We spend about an hour with each student doing one-on-one tutoring focused on reading and writing.

This wonderful program has won countless kudos over its 45 years. It is the oldest volunteer school tutoring program in the nation.

Volunteers are always welcome. For more information, contact program director Martha Socolar, through the church office, 410-523-1542.
